Bellefonte pitchers held Philipsburg-Osceola bats to two hits on the afternoon, but that did not stop the Mountaineers from downing Bellefonte 2-1.

Bellefonte struck first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring a run on a Dylan Deitrich sacrifice fly that brought Logan Mathieu home. However, the final two runs of the game were scored by P-O in the top of the second inning.

Sophomore Ashton Wetzler started the game on the mound for Bellefonte, throwing three innings of two run ball. Wetzler allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out one. The second inning was a struggle for Wetzler as he loaded the bases with nobody out, but he managed to limit the damage, allowing just two runs. He settled in for a scoreless third inning.

“I had a lot of moral support from my defense; they reminded me how many times we had went through the same situation and I trusted them and myself, and did my best to work out of the jam,” Wetzler said.

Adam Armstrong took over the team’s pitching duties to start the fourth inning. Armstrong threw four scoreless innings for the Red Raiders, giving up no hits, walking three and striking out eight.

Bellefonte’s offense collected six hits as a team but managed to score only one run.

“Don’t hit, you don’t win. Pitchers have given up four hits total in two games and the offense needs to respond. Force the issue. Make them make plays on us. Too many easy pop up outs,” Head Coach Dan Fravel said.

Garrett Reiter had two hits in his three plate appearances on the night. Logan Mathieu reached base every time he went to the plate, via two singles and a walk.

“It comes with a lot of practice, and that’s something a lot of us on the team have been taking for granted. It may not seem like practice is doing a whole lot, but the ones who take it seriously, which is most of the players, it shows when they play on the field,” Logan Mathieu said.

Bellefonte’s next game will be on Friday at Tyrone.
